Food, beaches, dancing, and speedboats, what more could you ask for? We’re headed to Brazil! This trek will be a great mix of cultural immersion (markets, food, dancing), beach time, and partying like there’s no tomorrow. We are traveling along the coast after all! First we’ll start in Rio and find the best dance party. One of us has the low down on Brazil (read our profiles to find out who!). Then we’ll move to the northern coast, where we’ll visit lagoons and sand dunes, while raging like there’s no tomorrow. Bring your swimsuits and let’s make this the BEST TRIP EVER!
Day 1 — Friday, Aug 18
Hop on a plane and let’s meet in Brazil. Bem-Vindos! Welcome to Brazil! The place known for Carnival and a number of Victoria Secret Angels. We’ll be exploring the neighborhood while we wait for others to arrive. We’ll meet for dinner, then head out for draaanks! Bring your dancing shoes, we just finished our internships and it’s about to go down!
Day 2 — Saturday, Aug 19
Heading to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain! Don’t worry, this will be done via cable car (don’t worry, Christina will have Dramamine)! From there, you’ll be able to see 360 degrees of breathtaking scenery, including Christ the Redeemer. There are also plenty of options to visit markets that feature crafts, food and clothing that represent Brazil. Bring on the Caipirinhas!
Day 3 — Sunday, Aug 20
We can’t get enough. Let’s SAMBA! We’re going to explore the city and find music on the street. Thais lived in Brazil, so she’s got the low down on all the cool stuff.
Day 4 — Monday, Aug 21
Fly to Sao Luis, the capital of Maranhao state. We’ll be staying in a hotel close to Barraca de Comida, a market with many food vendors. For those with an itch to rage, we will be going HARD that night at some local spots.
Day 5 — Tuesday, Aug 22
After breakfast, we leave for Barreirinhas. On the way, we’ll stop in the city of Morros for a snack and then we’ll head out to Grande Lencois and the Lagoa Azul Circuit. Lencois Maranhenses is a georgeous white sandy beach with shallow water ways. We’ll visit the best lagoons for this time of year, so bring your sunscreen and bathing suits! This is what Brazil is all about.
Day 6 — Wednesday, Aug 23
We’ll leave for Parnaiba on a short road trip and run away on a speedboat from the Port of the Tatus.
Day 7 — Thursday, Aug 24
We’re off to Jericocacoara! To get there, we’ll cross the white dunes and the Island of Love (Carnaubas). The Sunset Dune is awaiting us and (you guessed it) we’ll watch the sun set and partake in the party life with the locals.
Day 8 — Friday, Aug 25
The Jeri sand dunes are a sight to see. FOOD! Street food, bars, and dancing will fill our evening. This city has some of the best seafood in all the land.
Day 9 — Saturday, Aug 26
Today we’ll transfer to Fortaleza and will explore the area. With 16 miles of urban beaches, get your livers ready for our last night at Iracema, a Bohemian beach with bars and nightclubs.
Day 10 — Sunday, Aug 27
It’s time to leave Brazil. Don’t schedule your flights too early! See you back in Ann Arbor!
Christina “Tina Time” Lee
Did you say COOKIES??! Christina’s love for cookies led her to eat them for a living and now she probably knows more about cookies than anyone cares to know. But don’t worry, you won’t have to eat cookies the entire trip, that just means she loves food and will make sure you are well-fed! This extra quirky, modern day hippy (blame it on Berkeley) loves restaurants that are cute, cheap, and delicious.
She may look like a lightweight, but don’t misjudge her for the turnup. After all, she does come from the Bay and Tina Time is her alternate ego for a reason… find out more in Brazil!
Ed “Got Too Much Sauce” Norwood
When not living in a Ross conference room, Edward can be found working out and contributing to the society of six packs. He’s from the South and going into investment banking, which means he is up to rage all night just as much as he is up to lay around and enjoy the easy life. For both situations, his drink of choice – Kettle One Vodka (well that was before this b-school budget, now it’s Titos) on the rocks. Shaken, not stirred. He is willing to drink vodka when he is happy, or when school is stressful, or when it’s a Tuesday, or when the sun comes out, or when….well you get the point. Always ready to make or take a joke at his own expense so be ready to laugh. This is his first trip to South America so get ready. My Beaches are Bad and Boujee will be the most lit at night, chill during the day, alcohol ingested MTrek. … IT’S ABOUT TO GO DOWN
Steve “Gramps” Mendoza
Don’t be intimidated by Steve’s mature looks or impressive UC Riverside education (some say it is the lost Ivy league of the West), he is neither…but what HE REALLY IS, is the guy who many say is easy to make fun of yet also the one who instigates the chugging of drinks and the ripping of shots. Many MBA 1s can attest to this given the times they planned on a low-key casual nights out with this guy and then waking up to hangovers wondering how the heck the drinking escalated so quickly after just hitting up Skeeps or Ricks. Steve is actually one of the friendliest and most sarcastic people you will meet in your time at Ross. His closest friends call him a mental assassin with his snarky jokes and comebacks. In his free time, Steve enjoys listening to the Spice Girls and pretending to be Goku from Dragonball Z, although usually not together…unless it’s his 5 drink. If you are looking for advice on making important life decisions or on learning more about the majestic history of Brazil, then Steve is probably not your guy…BUT if you want to experience a good conversation with the Trek leader who will serve as the subject of cheap humor, then he’s the guy.
Thais “Primping is a Habit” Hernandez
Thais “Primping is a Habit” Hernandez has done the Brazil thing a couple of times. When she gets on any Brazilian dance floor she’ll fool you into thinking she’s Brazilian—you heard it here first, folks. But, alas, Brazil is only her 3rd home. Thais hails from sunny California by way of Havana, Cuba. When she’s not rocking the stage with Risky Business (The Rock Band at Ross), she is working on her hidden talent of flashmobing.
She was selected as “Most likely to be quoted in the accounting text book” in her section. Game recognize game.
Chris "Fun Facts" Jackson
Where does Fun Facts come from? Well Chris knows everything… literally everything. But don’t let his incredible knowledge fool you. In Chris’ former life, he was a nightclub party promoter in New Orleans, and he’s promising to leverage his past experience to deliver an M-Trek that you wont forget…or then again, maybe it’ll be an M-Trek you wont remember.
In his spare time, Chris enjoys making fun of Steve Mendoza and trying to get Ed Norwood’s muscles. He’s also the designated trip photographer, so according to him, whatever happens in Brazil, probably will not stay in Brazil… just kidding!
